Albuquerque,
New Mexico, and Adjacent Areas
Native
American peoples have long lived at various locations near the
meandering and bosque-lined river now known as the Rio Grande.
In 1706, a group of people, with a charter from the King of Spain,
established a village near present-day Albuquerque. Albuquerque
hence has a long history as a center of trade and commerce. Today
this, the largest city in New Mexico, taking into account the
greater metropolitan area, has a multi-cultural multi-ethnic population,
which exceeds one-half million people. Many locations of cultural
significance and many research and development centers of technical
excellence are positioned in the north-south corridor encompassing
Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Socorro, Alamogordo, the White Sands area;
and Las Cruces, all in New Mexico; El Paso in Texas; and Ciudad
Juarez, Mexico.
